I like how visual novels are extremely story-based. Art is very important as well but I can overlook that if the story is good. A very good visual novel should have good art and story in order to be successful. If it's missing one, it will be less effective. Music enhances the atmosphere. Even if music is less important than the art and story, bad music and sound effects can ruin the experience for the player no matter how good story and art are.

*nodnod* I definitely agree that the story is the most important part of a VN. I once heard a friend say that they didn't like hearing music tracks being repeated while playing a game. Have you ever noticed if repeated tracks tend to get tedious while you're playing a game? (Thanks for the input too!)

If you're talking about the melody of one track being repeated, then yes, I sometimes notice the music do get repeated. I guess it depends how good the music is. A lot of music in games repeat often because it's music for games. If there's too much variation in the track, it's distracting. It would also depend on the game. I find that simple music without a lot going on is best for visual novels. It is because the player has to read a lot. This is all based on personal experience though. If you're talking about the same track being played often, then I am unsure which games have that. It must be an annoying track if one can get sick of hearing it. The only times I get sick of hearing a track is if it's not what I like from the very beginning.

That's a really good point. I know I have really enjoyed the music in some visual novels I've played, but only when they correlate with the mood in the story. I think I'm going to come up with some main themes, then do variations on them for this first VN. I was playing Smash Brothers Brawl the other day and left it on the menu screen while I was talking on the phone. The music got really annoying, but it is for a menu where you're supposed to be making the choices fairly quickly.

Most of the time I keep my speakers off during a game anyway. A game with bad music or no sound doesn't bother me at all, although I know it affects others' opinions on the game. A lot of people would rather listen to thier own music selections too, so having an option to turn music off is important.
The poll is a very tough choice for me. Artwork is nice, but if the VN doesn't have both interesting story and strong characters, it's not worth playing. I chose multiple endings because the gamer in me needs to have what feels like meaningful interaction with the VN. If I'm only looking for a good story to read, there are plenty of regular novels available instead.

Yeah, I remember times playing games when I would turn off the music so I could listen to my own tunes too. *nodnod* Yeah, I agree. I was originally just going to do a kinetic novel, so no player choices, but I think half the fun of the visual novel is interacting with it in some way. There will be choices in this upcoming game. ^-^ I keep thinking about Kindle and all the e-books you can get online now. If you have an ipad, you can carry a whole library around with you, which is pretty amazing. It feels like the visual novel might have competition because of e-books, but I guess as long as we keep the player choices as part of the experience, VN's will still have a market audience.

What a tough poll! Everything is important but if I had to choose one as being MOST important I guess it would have to be story. If a story isn't deep with meaningful characters then odds are I'm not gonna stick with the game to the end. Character depth is also important. I guess that ties in with the multiple choices. Character depth and multiple choice are at a tie in second place for me. I like mulitiple choices because it offers me many options of how I want to get to know a character...and it's the gamer in me that enjoys that.

*nodnod* I really like multiple choices too. My brother always read me the Choose Your Own Adventure books growing up, and so I kind of grew up with them. ^-^ I hated dying. That part always sucked.

ROFL! ;D Oh man...I hate dying too That was the worst! I remember I'd get so annoyed with that and have to stop reading for a while to cool down. I have gained a lot of patience since then

I'm glad ^-^ I want to put in a couple of funny endings in the visual novel, like deaths for the player who does something intentionally stupid like walking off a cliff. It'd be great for lightening the mood if it gets too dark or something.

Lookin' forward to that I guess I'll just have to remember not to pick options that are obviously bad for my health. ........this being said by the girl who willingly walked into the Marsh. No sense of self-preservation? Perhaps so. If I were an anime character...I'd be constantly in some kind of trouble, I think ;D

Heh ^-^ But it turned out being a good thing going into the Marsh, sort of...ish. Well you got to know each other better! Don't worry too much- they'll just be random and few in between. I don't want it to distract too much from the actual story.

I'm just kiddin ^-^ That is a very good idea (the joke endings) and I think you should do it! I just couldn't help laughing because, knowing me, I'd probably fall for them without realizing. Well....maaaybe. It would depend on how obvious a trap they are Yeah. Going into the Marsh wasn't that bad. I did learn quite a few things about that world! *Suddenly, Kyrr appears out of nowhere. I quickly retrieve my baseball bat...then smack him upside the head with it!* Grah! Do us all a favor and become a vegetarian or something!

Haha!! Ooh, I'll have to draw a picture of Kyrr too. Heehee ^-^ Can't make him cuter than the main guys though. He'll be way creepier. ^-^
In response to your request of him to become a vegetarian: Kyrr: I'll decide that after I track you down and find out what you taste like. *wicked fanged grin* *rubs his head as he walks off*
